Wolves Premier League Preview
Wolves fans will be hoping they are not gearing up for another relegation battle after last season. Although they were some great wins such as ending Manchester United’s 29-game unbeaten run, it looked as if Wolves were headed for the drop last year.
Mick McCarthy, in his fifth year in charge at Molineux, will be determined to avoid another nervy season, stuck in the bottom three fighting for their lives.
Transfers were done quickly at the club this summer as a couple of players were sold who will not be missed, while tweaks were made to the squad for the campaign ahead. Defender Roger Johnson was bought to become a defensive presence for the side and former loan-signing Jamie O’Hara was brought back to lend a bit of bite to the midfield.
No significant players left the club this transfer window so McCarthy will be pleased to be working with the same squad of players from last year. Luckily for the manager, no clubs tried to lure Kevin Doyle away this summer and he will still lead the line and be the main goal threat at Molineux.
If Wolves want to survive this year they must put in the performances they know they can. Last year the side beat four teams from the top-six in the league but then were not able to raise their game for encounters with other teams around them in the table.
Bet365 offer Wolves at 11/4 to be relegated but they will probably pull off another survival mission this season. Backing Wolves at 1/3 to stay up doesn’t offer much value but with the three promoted sides looking primed for relegation already, and Wigan likely candidates to be facing the drop, Mick McCarthy should steer Wolves to safety once again this season.
If everything does go right for Wolves this season and their neighbours really struggle, they are priced at 7/1 to be the top Midlands club this season.
